It's Dickens, sewing up threads, some like you thought, others not. A classic tale of rich and poor/method and love. Redemption for Gradgrind, self-righteous lonliness for Bounderby.

Erm, this one I marked "read" and probably shouldn't have, but I definitely didn't want it on my 'to-read' list, so. I skimmed parts. I was depressed. I read SparkNotes before my exam. I got an A.

It's probably not as bad as I think it is. It's just that book among my English major friends. It's packaged with the later Norton Anthologies, so everyone has to read it, because everyone has to take British Literature post-1700, and it's everybody's last survey class, and you say the words "Hard Times" out loud, and everyone just groans. No vehement condemnation, but a table full of groans says plenty.

A cautionary tale as to why a conservative education minister would make a terrible school teacher. If you only teach children what you can test them on, you deprive them of their true education, their moral compass and their ability to express themselves.

Also Bounderby is a bounder and a cad.
