This felt more like women's fiction than romance? There was a lot about the fmc's journey and the romance felt kind of secondary

This book puts the slow in slow burn. Mariana Zapata has cemented herself for all things slow-burn and sometimes, that's exactly what you are in the mood for. What kept me reading despite the slow pace is the absolute dreamboat that is the MMC, Rhodes. It's so easy to imagine yourself as the FMC and go on this relaxing romance on the rocky mountains of Colorado (with some spice to boot).

After leaving a 14 year relationship with a famous country singer, Aurora decides to go back to her hometown. When Aurora was a teenager, her mother disappeared after going on a hike. To feel closer to her mother, Aurora plans to do the same hikes that her mother described in her journals. Aurora rents the garage apartment owned by Rhodes after his teenage son, Amos, puts it up for rent without his knowledge. Although Rhodes is grumpy and standoffish, she slowly finds a family with Amos and Rhodes.

I normally don't care for the grumpy/sunshine romance trope, but I really enjoyed this book. I was hesitant to read this book because the premise felt a bit out there (it still is, but the characters are so sweet), but I loved Zapata's other book, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. Rhodes was so charming, supportive, and a great partner for Aurora. I liked reading about the beautiful scenery that Aurora would see while going on hikes. I knew this was going to be a slow burn romance because Zapata is known for writing slow burns, but there was not enough spice in this book. The one (and only) sex scene between Rhodes and Aurora was extremely disappointing especially since they had such strong chemistry throughout the entire book. Aurora and Rhodes don't even kiss until 83% of the way through the book.

This book had me literally annoyed when I had to put it down. The only reason that it is not 5⭐️ is because of the third act conflict, as it felt like a mildly stupid argument which did get resolved in a cute way. Very good main characters with strong backstories and motives, and side characters were very lovable.

I love this book so much. An all-time favourite that’s a blend of romance and women’s fiction.

Rhodes is amazing and, of all MZ’s heroes, I find he strikes the best balance between grumpy and loving. Even without his POV (although I would give anything for even a chapter or two from his perspective) it was clear how much he loved Aurora. I also loved his relationship with his son

I would love to read more stories from these characters and I feel there were a few setups for new stories peppered in with Clara (I would really love this), Yuki, and Amos. I was honestly surprised when When Gracie Met the Grump came out because I was so sure the next book would be one of theirs 🤷🏻‍♀️
