Great book, but too time consuming for me. I'd say it's better for just jumping in at interesting points to read a few pages, rather than a cover to cover read.

Another title I am recalling from my look at previous journals. Here are some impressions at the time:

>>I have learned about the cultural climate of the Middle Ages. Particularly interesting is the monastic movement's development as it applies to the Church's gradual rise to power. In History class (I was teaching high school at the time), we recently studied the early Christians, and Cantor places our studies in context. Some of the book will be helpful. The book itself is interesting and well-written. I did not like the part about 12th century dialectic and philosophy as much; it was a bit long. The part of the Crusades was better. The book made me wish I was back in college.<<

The material and conclusions are outdated, but still good to know for comparison of the study of Early Medieval History and how far it has come since its writing
