the protagonist Jessamy Harrison is an eight year old girl with a wide imagination and confused mind. she never feels like she's understood completely and is deeply confused with her biracial identity, in search of a sense of belonging she befriends a girl TillyTilly who starts having a great influence on her and who she later realizes is not really there and Jessamy doesn't know about her at all.
the themes of race, belonging to a homeland, Nigerian mythology and folklore, and the concept of 'doubles' are explored in this bookbut none of them get an open conclusion which could be a little bothersome the writing style throughout the book is really ambiguous and alot of it is left on reader's imagination but i loved it alot. definitely reading more of her work in future.
