if you want a book about the difference between wants and needs, about what's right and what's wrong and all the things that fall somewhere in between (and all the things that definitely do NOT fall in between), about home and family and legacy; and you want it all framed in fairy tales, folklore, and mythology, crafted by a master storyteller- then I have some fantastic news.

Night in the Woods meets Shirley Jackson, and boy, you can feel the tonal dissonance of the book trying to balance both at the same time.

One thing I did really like are the two main characters. Can't believe I'm giving a novel a point in its favour for actually having the romance hinge on chemistry and character, instead of trying to manipulate-write me into caring about their love based on silly banter. Both Opal and Arthur have excellent personalities (Arthur especially, very irascible wet rat loser) and they clash and meld well.

Beautifully and emotionally written, although sometimes it felt like she got a little caught up in waxing poetic. I love the premise and the characters, and the writing creates such a sense of place!

SOOO GOOD
- ILLUSTRATIONS
- creepy house intertwined w a fairy tale story
- sullen grouchy characters
- setting that feels so real like it has sunk into the bones of the story (this couldn't happen in any other place)
- did i mention the illustrations.....i wish there were a thousand of them. one on every page.
