This was really sweet. I think that the story could have been a bit longer. At first Cyrus was too stiff for me, but he loosened up considerably. His pursuit of Lucy was a bit too quick. But, I've seen worse. I liked the epilogue. The updates on the characters woven into the conversation was well done.
The first part was great, with clues for us to figure out what makes our heroes tick and the reasons for the change in their lives and generally getting to know them.
I could understand where Lucy came from up to a point, being tall myself, and I enjoyed seeing her finally assert herself and honestly speak her mind. Cyrus lives his life following his strict plans, but this time, he realizes planning will not get him what he wants.
Lucy and Cyrus both are likable characters, especially when they get together and set each other straight. They clash and then things change and the story feels like it's missing a few chapters - the ones showing those two reaching the point of head-over-heels love from their respective starting points.
I liked the story, but it was a bit rushed towards the end, as tends to be the case with short stories.

Lucy is tired of waiting for her fiance to come to her, so she decides to go to him. Disguising herself as a French woman, she heads to London to seduce her own fiance, and discovers she's bitten off a bit more than she can chew.
I was excited to read Winning the Wallflower by Eloisa James! I usually shy away from novellas because I miss getting to see more developed characterization. I am so glad that I made an exception for Winning the Wallflower. It definitely proved me wrong about novellas, y’all.
This is meant to serve as an introduction into the third book in Eloisa James’ Fairy Tales series. (I’ll be reviewing The Duke is Mine soon!) For me, it did so much more. The characters in Winning the Wallflower were so well developed – I couldn’t get enough of them!
Lucy Towerton goes from wallflower to heiress. Her thrilled family encourages her to break it off with her current fiancee. She can do a lot better now that she has money (or so they say). She is hesitant because she is super attracted to Cyrus even if he is “just” a merchant and not part of the aristocracy. So, what is a girl to do?
Cyrus and Lucy grew on me incredibly quickly. Y’all, Eloisa James packed so much fantastic characterization into a really small package. I definitely wish they could have gotten their own full-length story, but I am still happy with what we do get.
The chemistry and tension came across so well, Cyrus makes Lucy incredibly angry and you can definitely feel the sparks flying. Then later, sexytimes sparks start flying and you can definitely feel those too. Excellent writing.
So, not only did this stand out as a wonderful novella – it stands out as one of my favorite historical romances period! Winning the Wallflower by Eloisa James is absolutely worth reading (especially since the ebook is only a buck!).

Winning the Wallflower by Eloisa James is a short story /novella set in the Regency period. Lucy's very tall and thinks she's plain. She is betrothed to Cyrus, but he doesn't appear interested in Lucy so much as he is her title. But, at least he is nice to look at. But then Lucy inherits a fortune. Now Cyrus finds his engagement broken. He also finds that he really wants Lucy and not just her title. But, he'll have to convince her.
I loved how Lucy calls Cyrus out about his initial motives. She forces him to see how shallow his goals are. She doesn't trust him for awhile and he must work to convince her of his love. HEA ending.
The book has a sizable except of another novel in the "fairy tale " series.

I loved this story! My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer. Almost half of the novella's pages are actually sneak peaks for other Eloisa books, which is fine except that as I was keeping an eye on where I was (page-wise) while I was reading it I was quite surprised when it just suddenly ended. I would have loved to have seen a bit more at the end, although the epilogue was fantastic.
Favorite parts of the novella:
Lucy--great character. I loved how she ended up coming into her own and really made Cyrus reexamine not only how he saw her but also himself. When she called him a dumba$$--too funny! Every time! :-)
Cyrus--Being able to see the development of the romance from his point of view as well as from Lucy's was really important here, because we were able to understand exactly why he acted the way he did. I just loved watching his character as he finally realized what living for and by his "lists" was doing to him as a person.
Pretty much every interaction between Lucy and Cyrus. Trademark Eloisa James material, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Epilogue--awesome! Really cute peek into what the future holds for these two.
All in all, it was a great set-up for her next novel, The Duke is Mine. It would have been great to have seen these two characters get their own novel instead of just a novella, but this was an enjoyable way to tide ourselves over until James's next full-size book comes out. For 99 cents, you really can't go wrong.

While this story is cute, it felt out of place with the rest of the series. I'm not sure if that was on purpose - and I still liked it - but it did give me pause to wonder.

In the midst of my paranormal and contemporary reads, I always find it refreshing to return to one of my favorite genres: historical romance. This was my first read from Eloisa James, and I enjoyed this brief respite from my reading pile.
I really liked Lucy for her practical, intelligent, but slightly dreamy nature. She seemed real and relatable, and reminiscent of my favorite historical romance heroines. Cyrus, on the other hand, - I loved when he lost control of his Plan and ended up realizing what he could nearly have missed out on.
This was a quick read, as how I didn’t realize it was a novella until I reached the end. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my quick foray into the world shared by Cyrus and Lucy and I would have loved to hear even more about it. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Eloisa James’ work.
