Gay pain: the musical. Pretty good regardless, but just know what you're getting into going in. YA coming of age, self-realisation stuff, but set in an explicitly religiously homophobic setting. Could be great for some readers and terrible for others.

This is a real "trust the process" book. Ultimately super rewarding, but I wish it got to the heart of the story a little bit quicker. There are a lot of "little things" that brought the book down to four stars for me. I wish the side characters were more developed, they all fell super flat and grayed together in comparison to the two mains; and even then the main characters didn't have much that made them stand out in comparison to each other. There's also a huge emphasis on teen drinking, maybe I wasn't cool in high school, but it felt extra emphasized and didn't necessarily add anything valuable. Generally speaking, the theme of the novel is what brought the rating up for me. It feels like we're inundated with so many teen coming out stories, but this one felt really specific and unique. Big for girls with religious trauma lol.
