I was really impressed with this! I’d heard a lot of hype initially, but then as time went on the response I heard was mixed so I was less excited to pick it up. But it was really good, lived up to the hype and is one of the better YA fantasies out there. Plus it’s inspired by African mythology, which is a plus in my books!

The book heavily reminded me of Avatar the Last Airbender and of Ember in the Ashes, and the author correctly credited the creators of both.

I enjoyed the plot... kind of, still. Though many of the struggles seemed contrived, the resolution was very fulfilling.

I did not enjoy the main character, Zel, as much as the other characters in the novel. Amari was vastly superior, in goals, growth, motivations, everything.

Thirsty teenagers need to chill.
