I really love this series, and with this book, it's starting to get a little darker and deeper. I find all of the characters believable and relatable in their own ways, even when they are fantastical creatures or Seers. There is a segment of this book that takes place in the Underworld, and it weaves together so many myths and perfectly captures so much of the longing, beauty, and melancholy of mortality. This isn't a series that is reinventing literature or pushing my brain to its limits, but it is enjoyable to read and contains so much that I love in one place. I especially appreciate that even as things get a bit darker, the central characters are still good (albeit flawed) people, full of empathy and guided by their own moral compasses, and there is always still hope and some sense of normalcy. So many fantasy stories suck me into a dark, twisted black hole of despair, and I am grateful to be able to have the things I love about this kind of universe without having a despair hangover afterward.

Another great addition to the Jackaby lineup! I was lucky enough to receive an eARC from the publishers.

Probably my favorite aspect of these novels is how progressive and un-stifling they are. Unlike other period novels (and movies), the Jackaby series offers a fresh cast of characters that are wholly accepting of different ways of life. Besides the awesome writing talent that Ritter has, fast paced action, and well crafted dialogue, it was the perfect follow up to books 1 and 2.

I summed up Beastly Bones by saying that "this is how you present a strong female heroine" and I still stand by it! To avoid spoilers, I will keep my review short and simple, but I am as always looking forward very much to the next instalment!

This was a much more complicated book than I had thought it would be. I wasn't sure where investigating Jenny's death would lead, but it was certainly not the direction the book took, which was much more interesting than I had anticipated. There were a really varied range of curious and unexpected creatures encountered, it was nice to see Charlie and Douglas, and learning more about Jackaby was truly both revealing and emotional. Jenny's progress was also fun to watch. Abigail seems bolder. I enjoyed this more than the previous novel, as the characters really seemed to come more into their own. Just as a side note, while not an edge of your seat cliffhanger, the story will definitely pick up where this leaves off. Jenny's death was just the beginning of something pretty big!

There is something humbling about knowing that an entity capable of moving mountains and reshaping continents still takes the time to tend to the smallest patch of dirt. Little things matter. Footsteps matter.

4 stars. I don't know when the last time was that I loved a series so much as I love this one. Ghostly Echoes is just as funny, engaging, mysterious, and thought-provoking as the first two.

Parents be advised. My only complaint and hindrance from giving this book 5 stars is the cross-dressing...woman? And I want to be clear.
Spoiler This book contains a scene in which Jackaby disrupts the abuse of a man who is dressed and behaving as if he is a woman. Jackaby stands up for the man, even referring to him with female pronouns and using his chosen feminine name. He goes on to tell Abigail that it is not for doctors to determine our gender and that the man is very brave for choosing to be "herself." Now, the kindness in action here is amazing - it is a compassion I wish every Believer would show. But the rationalization is unacceptable. As a Christian, I cannot approve of this content (which glorifies what the Lord calls an "abomination") and thus, deduct one star.

"What could scare a man who fights monsters?"
His expression hardened. "Being a man who doesn't."

Wow, a very well told story with a lot adventure and, finally, some real answers. This is Jenny's story - she is finally ready to solve her crime and Jackaby and Abigail are on the case.

There are a lot of twists and turns and so many new creatures I couldn't keep count. A lot of the loose strings we've been holding from the last 2 books are finally tied off and we have a lot of things resolved.

Hopefully the next one is the finale. I'm ready to find out the whole story

This was very similar to the others in the series. I really wish we would have got more Charlie in this book because I miss seeing him and Abigail interact.

Holy smokes, this got epic!

I wasn't super blown away by the first novel in this series, but the second and now the third have each gotten exponentially bigger and better. Not only is the plot within this book solid, but the overarching series big bad is emerging from the shadows at last.

So proud of you, Jenny <3 Shout out also to the casual "Jackaby says trans rights" bit.
