Man, what a change from book two. In many ways this transitioned from serial mystery to urban fantasy series. I like that it wasn’t afraid to be darker and more disturbing while clinging tightly to the characters’ growing bonds and delving more and more into their pasts. The last quarter of the book was a somewhat strange change in atmosphere that I’m not sure how I feel about. Undeniably much much better than the last book and arguably better (inarguably more complex) than book 1. I’m very impressed by the versatility of this series. It’s not falling into the standard mystery or fantasy traps.
2.5-3
Characters of Jenny, Abigail, and Charlie were best. Political viewpoints were disappointing in an otherwise good beginning. Jackaby - love this character, but Jackaby wasn't the same in this book. I didn't care for the ending, nor the journey to the Underworld - which is usually much more interesting.
I was baffled as to why Jackaby took a back seat to Abigail's character as the story progressed. The first 2/3 or so of this novel held my interest, but then it became stale, and Jackaby's character in this third book wasn't as charming as with the first two stories. The trip to Underworld was confusing at times.

I adore this story I think more than the first book from this amazing series!! Theres romance (but not so much that its overbearing or cheesy) and theres action (but not so much that its ove active) and theres mystery (but not so much that its frightening) and theres myths/legends/folklore (but not so much you can tell its fake) and theres science (but not so much you cant understand), too!! If any of that made sense to anyone, then I definitely and highly suggest reading this fantastic story!! I love William Ritter's writing style; witty, funny, down to earth, smart, and very talented! And very unlike anyone else I've ever read. You can tell he has done his research and really loves each moment of his job!
R.F. Jackaby, Abigail Rook, Jenny Cavanaugh, Charlie Barker, and a host of colorful, unique, and honest characters from all walks of life fill the pages of the Jackaby series and I adore reading every single word!!!
