Okay, I both really liked and kinda disliked this book. For one, the plot is great, the characters are developing rather nicely (and I love Charlie and Abigail - it's just enough romance to be cute, and not enough to be bad), and the story has come almost full circle with the first book. But they did have a few things that bugged me, like looking for a fortune teller (they're bad news), and they did have a boy being a girl, which was weird. Luckily, it was not one of the main characters, but still, I did not appreciate it. Overall, the book was great, but again, I was not a fan of those little things.
I loved the intricacies of the story. Ritter weaves Jenny's past and the gangs current problems together seamlessly. I can't wait to read Dire King!
GETTING BETTER & BETTER.

This installment was my favorite yet, another simple quick read that I devoured in a day.
I love the world that Ritter has built. And each book has added another piece to the world itself. We get to see new locations, adventures and characters that only add to the book.
Jackaby is so fun to watch. He has some of the best small talk and one-liners and seeing him have some feelings?! YES. It’s also great that we got some back-story on him and I like this new layer it added to his character. My favorite is that this book is heavy on the friendship. And while I love romance, when a friendship is done so well you don’t even notice it’s awesome. Abigail and Jackaby have a great relationship and genuinely care for each other, what a great duo.
Charlie and Abigail took a much bigger backseat than in the previous books. Almost as if it might have been best to not even have a romance component for Abigail (unless it all comes together in book four, to be determined). I think they’re SO CUTE, but since I wish we had more of them it’s hard to love this romance wholly.
What I realized in this third book was that so much from the beginning of this series is pulling through to the finale. There’s been a lot of build-up and slowly peeling away the layers to create what I know will be an amazing finale. I love how nuanced some of these aspects have been and how it’s all falling into place.
Overall audience notes:
- Young adult supernatural fantasy
- Language: none
- Romance: a kiss or two
- Violence: murder, vampires, physical, some magical

This is the sort of book that is just compulsively readable - the characters are fun and progress each book in a variety of ways, and the story line just gets better as it begins to head towards the eventual end. This series is one that I reach for when I just want brain candy - something enjoyable that keeps me turning the pages.
Ok this is the novel that really sold the series for me. This is where all the strange and seemingly random things start to come together and really make sense. I was immediately hooked into this story because it seemed we were finally going to get some answers about Jenny's murder and her past. Why did her fiance run away when she was murdered. Who murdered her and why?
I am in awe of the intricate imagination of the author. The deep dark things that come out of this book are almost as scary as the dark and evil and almost plausible things. I continue to enjoy the main characters (Jackaby, Abigail, and Charlie). The story moves quickly and is complex, but written in a way that is fast and easy to read. The writing has a strong scientific and straight forward way to it, while at the same time conveying the emotions that are happening.
I can't wait to read the final book and hopefully, maybe get some answers? This series has surprised me by how much it's developed and how hooked I've been.
PS: I highly recommend the audiobook.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

While this series will never leave a mark on my life as a reader it's quite enjoyable and entertaining. It's snarky, it has a good female lead and a socially inept lovely detective. Oh, and paranormal stuff. This kind of format works for me, it keeps me on my toes and it's never boring.
I guess it's one of those things that, if they're well developed, they never get old. Ghostly Echoes has flaws, but it's still quite refreshing even if it isn't the most unique book out there. Actually, even if Jackaby is my favourite installment of the series this one is pretty close. The mystery was intriguing and it finally gave us more information about the general picture, the plotline that was introduced earlier in the series.
I also liked how Jenny had a bigger role in this book. I really liked her growth and her friendship with Abigail. It was also satisfying to learn about her past and to finally understand how her past is linked to the main plotline.
I wished we got more of Jackaby in Ghostly Echoes. It might be because there's never enough of him for me, but while I was happy to see the author address his past I wished he had been more present. He was there for most of the novel, sure, but sometimes he felt a bit less important and that made me a bit sad. I love my heroes with no people skills and their cluelessness on point and while I love Abigail's voice, I still wish to have more of Jackaby.
That said Ghostly Echoes is a solid sequel. It's clearly a bit of a filler book but not in a negative way. It's still entertaining, snarky and a good paranormal mystery, but it's definitely a set up for book four. Which makes me quite excited for said book. Too bad there's a long wait ahead of me.
Favourite quote:
“Miss Lee was really a boy, wasn’t she? Underneath?” He slowed and then came to a stop and looked me square in the eyes. “That’s up to her to decide, I suppose, but it’s not what I saw. Underneath, she was herself—as are we all. Lydia Lee is as much a lady as you or Jenny or anyone. I imagine the midwife or attending doctor probably had another opinion on the matter, but it only goes to show what doctors really know.” “Shouldn’t a doctor be able to tell at least that much?” Jackaby’s expression clouded darkly. “I have great respect for the medical profession, Miss Rook,” he said soberly, “but it is not for doctors to tell us who we are.”

I love that some questions got answers and that we learned more about some people's pasts . I look forward to the next one .
Much different than the prior two books, but I ended up really enjoying it. Can't wait for book 4!
I am so excited for the next, and sadly last, book in this series. My favourite so far. Try out this series if you like fantasy and supernatural things with great characters.
