Ok, so this did feel like a bit of a filler in the series, there was a lot of set up for The Dire King, but I still really enjoyed it.
We went a lot further into the past of both Jackaby and Jenny, and actually got a few more answers about the two of them.
I really want to get on to The Dire King ASAP to see how this all ends.

I have mixed feelings about this one. There were parts I really loved--getting more story and character development on Jenny, and some parts of Jackaby's back story, were both solidly five star elements. But, what started in the first book as 'I can see parts of the world most people can't see' has now developed into a full blown system of pagan deities, charms/magic/mediums/possession, and a universalist world where all the religions have little separate pieces of the truth. (Plus, very clear and direct support of cross dressing as a life choice.)

I'll read the last book in order to get all the loose ends tied up, but if the series has started off this way, I probably would not have continued past the first book.

In terms of standard content issues, it's pretty low, and similar to the first two. A bit of violence and blood, scenes that are scary but mostly in an adventure story kind of way, and a couple of passing references to possible unfaithfulness in serious/married relationships. Because of the worldview issues though, I wouldn't hand this to any of my own nieces and nephews who were younger than mid-teens or so.

Rating: 3 stars

There is something humbling about knowing that an entity capable of moving mountains and reshaping continents still takes the time to tend to the smallest patch of dirt. Little things matter. Footsteps matter.

Yet another interesting story in the world of Jackaby! Though I truly enjoyed this story, it didn't keep me hooked like the others had. There was less of a let's-solve-this-mystery plot line, which I missed, and more of a oh-no-let's-find-out-who-the-real-evil-is thing instead. Not that it wasn't interesting, but also not too alluring in terms of keeping me involved in the story. The blending of new and old characters was fun, especially Jenny's newfound confidence. I'm definitely interested to see what happens in the final installment!
