Jackaby and Rook are at it again! Picking up where they left off in Beastly Bones, pieces of the puzzle ate falling into place. The wonderfully imagined world of Jackaby grows in this latest installment, opening the doors to more amazing and unbelievable creatures. The mystery of Jenny Cavanaugh is unfolding and leaving more questions in its wake than answers. What will the uncover and what will be the cost?

Lovely as always, but a bit more scientific than the others--at times in layman terms but usually not. Otherwise simply brilliant and this time with a touch of doctor who ideals, creating the superwholock trifecta!

WILLIAM RITTER’S GHOSTLY ECHOES WAS A VERY FUN-PACKED READ.

I enjoyed reading it throughout, although there were some bits which bugged me here and there. But I will get to those later. First, all of the good, because the bad is minuscule, and probably only bugged me due to my pickiness.

The characters were vibrant and I found that they were easy to differentiate between. When they spoke, they each had their own distinct voice, and their on particular way of speaking. One can also easily feel each character’s personality radiate out of their dialogue. Detective Jackaby and Miss Ritter’s banter was especially enjoyable.

The world-building was done very well. I was able to picture each location in my mind with the help of Ritter’s descriptive language. I was transported to the U.S.A. in the Victorian Era as easily as more fantastical places in the book (I won’t go into detail on those so as to avoid spoilers).

I greatly enjoyed William Ritter’s writing…to the point where slower portions of the book kept me engaged simply due to the rich language used. I have some quotes from this book which I need to write down, because they were just fantastically written and/or hilarious. Ritter’s wit definitely permeates his writing, and it was incredibly enjoyable for me to experience.

Now, as for the minuscule negatives. I found that I became very frustrated in places, because I was given the same information as the characters, but I would make important conclusions about said information a lot quicker than the characters. I was a little irritated at waiting for them to catch up, but then I reminded myself that their flaws make them more believable as characters. Plus, they are put under strain, whereas I’m sitting comfortably while digesting the above-mentioned information.

And the other maybe negative thing I have to say is that I found that the book was building toward a climax, but that it did not climax quite as aggressively as I felt that it would? Perhaps aggressively is not the right word, and that maybe I should use the word “explosive” in stead. There was a build up with very little release, in either case. But I do understand that this book, along with the two which came before it, are building toward the overarching climax of the entire story line. This was therefore not a major negative.

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO THOSE WHO LIKE HISTORICAL FICTION, FOLKLORE, AND COLOURFUL LANGUAGE WHICH WILL KEEP YOU ENGAGED THROUGHOUT!

4.5/5

I can't say enough good things about this series. And Ghostly Echoes is the best book yet.

Check out my full review on Forever Young Adult.

Even though these books are all tied together with many of the same characters and situations, including Jackaby, Abigail, Jenny and Charlie, they are all so uniquely different! The first book was an invitation to this new world with an unusual man who had an even more unusual job. The second book was full of adventure and fun and even quite a few laughs. This one was much more serious, and yet also deeply enjoyable! We learned so much more about the characters we have grown to love, and the last few chapters led to what I can only imagine will be a crazy ending in book 4! I can't wait to get to it!

Incredible! I am loving the various villains and enjoyed the revealing of Jenny's past. Maybe the romance between her and Jackaby was sudden (or maybe I am just oblivious) but I support its inclusion and I am anxious to see how it turns out. One of my favorites so far. Immensely excited for the concluding book and also hope to see Ritter writing much more afterward.

This is the best book so far in the series! Ghostly Echoes didn’t feel like an episodic installment of a paranormal crime procedural, but like a part of an overarching plot! I am loving the way that these characters are developing! It actually feels like this series has an end goal now.
I do, however, have two major gripes in this book and the series as a whole. The first is minor: falling and clumsiness are used as a plot device way too much. I think Abigail Rook has fallen plot relevantly a million times in this series. She’s so clumsy that it’s just not believable. My other major gripe is that this series, this book in particular, struggles with theme. The first two books make it seem like this is all just a fun story without a deeper meaning. I think that’s fine! Enjoyable even! However, there are chapters in this book where it seems like the reader is being beat over the head with themes that aren’t relevant to the other books. I think there either has to be an overarching theme throughout all the books that can be exemplified differently through each installment or none at all. From the tone of the first two books, I think this book should have gone with none at all!
Regardless, this is a great setup for the last book! I cannot wait to read it!
