The House of Hades

Oh my goodness!! Every part of this!!

Nico is breaking my heart!! I love his character, but what he's going through!! Nico needs all my hugs!!

if only all men were like percy

"Damasen," the Titan asked, "do you remember the sun?"
"Yes. It was yellow. When it touched the horizon, it turned the sky beautiful colors."
"I miss the sun," Bob said. "The stars, too. I would like to say hello to the stars again."

For the ninth book in a fairly lighthearted middle grade fantasy series, The House of Hades packs a mean emotional punch. For starters, the idea of throwing your two most iconic characters in Hell is a stroke of genius, forcing them to face not only eight books' worth of iconic enemies but to face their own sins-- which is always weird to think about in a middle grade setting, but it's so much more powerful BECAUSE you don't expect it.

Riordan doesn't just leave the boundary-pushing character moments in Tartarus; our heroes on the Argo II hit some of the most iconic beats in the entire Camp Half-Blood saga, from THAT scene with Nico and Jason, to Frank's challenge in Venice, to THAT set of Leo chapters... All of this capped off with some shockingly reflective, deeply emotional, deeply loving beats that hit HARD. It rocked my world back when I was a little eleven year old binge reading these fun little mythology books, and it still got me to tear up eight years later. I always remembered this book fondly, but now I'm quite confident that this really is Riordan's best work.

Also, in terms of the audiobook:
The switch to a different narrator was definitely jarring for a bit. Still, Chamian is solid, sometimes great, sometimes kinda low effort, but at bare minimum it's acceptable. It does the job.

Re-read review:

One of my ultimate favourites for a reason, this book is SO SO SO GOOD. Only reason it took me long to finish was bc of school. Percy and Annabeth deserve all the beautiful things in life after all they went through (tbh all of them). My baby Nico this book is such a pain for him
