The PJO universe has reached a new height with this addition.
This book is amazing! You finally get to see a glimmer of what a demigod story could be with the immense challenges thrown at our heroes. I loved the Tartarus setting for Percy and Annabeth, squealing when we finally got a "Katara discovers blood also has water" moment which I know won't be explored further but it was fun while it lasted.
Nico and Hazel's bro-sis-ness is still kinda hard to swallow but his vulnerable side was perfectly showcased in a sequence of high-tension scenes that kept me on the edge. Hazel was finally given a chance to prove herself and while it was anti-climactic, it was better than witnessing one of the potentially strongest demigod get reduced to constant boy problems for 3 books. I would have loved to see her do more epic things with her powers but considering Uncle Rick's history with female characters, I suppose I'm just being greedy here.
And LEO. LeoLeoLeoLeoLeo!!! Idc who says what, he is funny and I will die on that hill! Him and Calypso were such a refreshingly organic way of building a teenage relationship that it makes Hazel and Frank's weird thing look plain forced by comparison.
On the topic of Frank... he grew I guess. Quite literally. Apparently not being chubby anymore and growing a few inches is character development.
Last but not least, BOB! Both big and small Bobs to be clear. Big Bob was such an endearing addition and while at this point I am quite tired of our heroes winning just because most inhuman beings in the series are ultra dumb, Bob was simply lovely to meet.
I believe that the Heroes of Olympus series could have been sufficiently wrapped up in three or maximum four books. Dragging it to five is quite absurd but it makes my daily chores more interesting so I'm not complaining (love u EchoWirm Audiobooks!)
