I love a good fairytale retelling and Emily is able to bring all of the characters to life in a new way. Love that. That being said the first 60% felt like an eternity. The end was chefs kiss though

“The truth is that we both got lost in the world, and the world didn’t care to find us so we found each other instead. Nobody has ever loved me that way. Then again, I’m not sure that our love is something common. It hurts to good.”
A bunch of SINNERS up in this book.
“Father” Cade didn’t fool me for one second, his mind was murder-sex-self harm-repeat all the time- babe there’s not a single ounce of catholic in you (which was reconciled at the end of the book so hey I’ll give it that).
Amaya’s best quality was her fierce love for her brother but other than that her personality felt like a beige crayon.
I liked the premise, the murder and gore was even a little less than I expect from Miss Emily and I wanted to like it but at the end of the day I think it was the flat characters that made me rate this book so low. Both Amaya and Cade were uninteresting as fuck. I’m comparing them to someone like Venesa and Enzo from Hexed (another Emily book) and it’s clear as day that Amaya and Cade were just not fleshed out enough. Boring and uninteresting I’m afraid compared to the electric chemistry between Venesa and Enzo.

A twist on the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's not a story I'm familiar with, so I didn't really get the references with this one.
Cade is a priest with a dark secret, and Amaya is a young woman trying to hold her life together with her younger brother. By night, she becomes Esmeralda.
The spice in this story is a very slow burn, but once it kicks in, it burns intensely
