An excellent entry in the series with Cadfael and Hugh at work on a 'cold' case, where they first need to identify the victim. The Stephen / Matilda war is more than just background noise in this book.

After reading through so many of Ellis Peters books I find myself thinking that she must have been a keen observer of life. Her stories always seem so spot on with the human dynamics.
Those observations were very evident in this story of love and loss. The story starts with such a dramatic find and ends with a flourish of Cadfael's deductive reasoning.

Sometimes I am able to guess the truth before Cadfael, and, delightfully, this was not one of those times.
