I have consumed more spooky-season material this year than in any other period of my life.
It is abundantly clear that the scariest monsters are.

One of the most creative concepts for a novel, taking the horrors and science some people only imagine as “fictional” and using them to parse the very-real, very-traumatic experience of institutional anti-Black racism. I LOVE THIS BOOK
5 Shoggoth Stars
I love when there are tales within a main story. A little magical realism, secrets, portals to places unknown, and good old every-day racism.
1954 and a black Korean war vet is just helping his uncle George find safe traveling for "negroes." The fact that science fiction, dark fantasy and magical realism are the "norm" for our black antagonists, is a breath of fresh air.
The pacing is consistent and each story is a just thread woven into the larger fabric of time, space and yes, the continuum.

It was an excellent collection of the mundane horrors of malignant homicidal racism, with a nice sprinkle of the occult. I have my reservation about whether Ruff was the best person to tell these stories, but I can't deny the execution has been superb. There are some elements of Lovecraftian cosmic horror in the stories, but they're mostly a different kind of horror.

had to return to the library and just couldn’t really get into it. May try another time!
Wished it was a bit longer
Really solid book but it ended a bit quickly with what seemed a rushed conclusion. But overall loved the characters and the story through and through.
