I finally got around to reading this, months after the HBO series finished its season and was then canceled. I have to say, I'm deeply torn on which version I like more, the book or the TV show.

I know the book is always supposed to be better, and there are elements the book does much better than the HBO series. The overarching plotline holds together much better in the book I felt, with clearer motivations and less shrouded in inevitable destiny talk. The chapters in the book also have a clearer focus without the need to check in with the overarching storyline. The show strived for and occasionally succeeded at bigger and more wondrous details, particular Hippolyta's story, but her story in the book, while smaller in scope, still maintains the same principles of her character. Maybe the only detail that I felt the show did exceptionally better was at elements of horror, with the book feeling somewhat PG-13 in that regard (although plenty of people still have grisly deaths).

The book portrays a slightly wider variety of black characters, which is refreshing. Instead of only focusing on the triumvirate of Atticus, Letitia, and Montrose, we see Freemasons, former servants, school children, and more. And as far as I can remember, the book didn't include any characters that were set up just for the sake of having killed moments later (and then completely forgotten about). So if you have seen the HBO series already, I still highly recommend this book. If you wanted to read this before watching the HBO series, I highly recommend that as well. And if you just want an entertaining pulpy read, then this book is for you too.

DID NOT FINISH: 45%

Was half listening through several chapters and then felt lost. Would like to revisit later and restart the book.

The HBO show improves upon the source material.

This book has been on my list to read ever since the premier of the show, Lovecraft Country, on HBO. And while the show was fantastic, this book was equally as good - Jim Crow laws plus supernatural elements make an excellent horror book.

The book is based on Chicago and follows the family and friends of a young black man named Atticus Turner who is a descendant of a white man (and slave owner) Titus Braithwhite. Titus is the founder of a society of white men who deal in philosophy/ natural magic and this society is seeking Atticus in order to use his blood/ancestry for a ritual.

Each chapter presents a new horror and focuses on a new character as the protagonist. From devil dolls to haunted houses to alternate universes and magical potions that allow you to change your race, each chapter is an adventure.

I really enjoyed this book! I was really impressed by how realistic/relatable the author wrote each character, especially considering that the author is white and each protagonist is black. I love that he wanted to feature black characters in sci-fi - we deserve it! And this book was very well written - 4 stars!
