This book deserves its excellent reputation, but I had trouble getting into it. The opening chapter is from the POV of a self-centered teenage boy, Bero, and it wasn’t until the second chapter that I realized that I wasn’t supposed to like him.  Kaul Hilo, also a major character, presents initially as an overly macho posturer. Kaul Shae, who became my favorite character, is introduced at a moment when her life is in pieces, and it takes her a while to realize where her destiny lies.

Overall, however, this three-book series is some of the most innovative and dramatic fantasy of the last ten or fifteen years. The decades-long blood feud between the Kauls of the No Peak clan and the Eits of the Mountain clan ebbs and flows. It’s a drama of move and counter-move, and each time you think one clan is winning, the other clan makes a surprise move.

I think this was another book I went into knowing too little about. I knew it was a mafia story set in Asia, and that was about it. I erroneously thought there would be more romance or more female characters, unfortunately I was wrong on both counts. Overall, I just found it to be very dry, and the expositions went on for ages.

Amazing characters who are deeply flawed and yet so easy to care about. Excellent portrayal of civil war and the complexities of post-colonial development, as well as international politics - I’m  considering recommending this to my undergraduate comparative politics students as an enjoyable way to consider how natural resources, colonial history, corruption and crime, and international politics interact. Particularly given the author has no academic history/polisci background, it’s incredibly impressive that she was able to create a fictional world with such realistic politics, and it speaks to what must be an incredible grasp of colonial and post-colonial Asian history.

This was phenomenal! After starting it last year in summer and just not getting into the story, I picked this up again this year and good thing I did. This is very intriguing story about the island of Kekon, where Jade has been used by the Green Bones, an elite warrior people, to enhance their skills in ordee to protect the people from foreign rule. Two main clans emerged from a previous war and split the island between them. As tensions rise once more between the clans, we get to know the main players and uncover their plans and political intrigues. I'm super excited to continue the series see how everything unfolds. One last info: this is very adult in themes and plot.
