I'll come back to it one day but I got spoiled a big shift that occurs somewhere between page 211 and book 3 (
Wen, a character that I cannot stand, becoming Pillar
).

Beside that, I keep only being able to read 20 pages at a time, which is a new low for me. This book doesn't draw me in, I keep waiting for characters to be meaningfully interesting, or for the plot to happen, or for the worldbuilding to shine. None of those 3 things are happening, so being spoiled was the cherry on top.

I do like the theme of modernity vs tradition, but it is not central.

Such a good book it’s left me angry that I now don’t got to choose what I read next. I HAVE TO read the other two.

I pride myself on being able to predict what’s going to happen in a story, being able to pick up on all the foreshadowing clues and breadcrumbs. With Jade City by Fonda Lee, that was simply not possible. This Tokyo Revengers-esque story was amazing from cover to cover. The magic system was simple and intriguing. The characters had their fair shares of both flaws and virtues. The complex politics were explained in a way that even I could understand.
I have not given a book five stars in a long time, but I will gladly do so now.

Unpopular opinion here
I couldn’t relate to the characters, found it hard to concentrate which took me forever to finish this
