Very daunting series, but while I was trudging through the Way of Kings, this felt like a smoother read with more compelling characters.

Had to skip ahead and skim-read at the 50% mark and almost got bored/DNFed at the 80% mark but maybe that’s just me and my concentration.

I liked Anden and Shae, but the other characters were just meh? It felt like all these characters should have much more complex relationships besides their families and clans but they were just so isolated with limited human connection amongst the other side-characters. The author had so much potential to expand the intricate human dynamics but only focused on political intrigue and the battles.

There is something about family conflicts and politics in books that keeps me hooked! I enjoyed exploring the thought process of our POV characters, seeing their values and morals within the world that they live in. The overall feeling that this generation of the Kauls is not at its peak was effectively shadowed throughout the book as we read.

The women of this book, which we do not have a lot of, were some of my favorite parts of the story (Anden too). I hope we see more of Wen in the second book, especially since we established her role in this conflict towards the second half of the book.
