not usually my type of book but it was a fun read, the world building didn’t feel “too much” and i enjoyed the story

I think I need a couple of minutes to just stare at my wall after that ENDING! I am so glad I did not give up on this book because I really enjoyed it. It’s not my favorite fantasy book but it had really good elements. I love the aspect of power coming from Jade and I can’t wait to see other usefulness that comes along with it. I need someone to put me in a room with Bero because that man never gave up when it came to getting his revenge. Now with Hilo I wouldn’t want to be in a 50 mile radius of that man but at least he survived and I’ll be able to get more unhinged action from him. Overall I know this is only book one but I also hope for more character development from all the characters especially from Shaelinsan and Anden.
“Expectations are a funny thing,” Wen said. “When you’re born with them, you resent them, fight against them. When you’ve never been given any, you feel the lack of them your whole life.”

this book was genuinely amazing! the only thing stopping me from giving this a 5 star was the jarring smut scene that took place in like the first 40 pages of the book that felt inherently, and extremely, unnecessary to the plot. it was jarring enough that it took me out of reading it, and i had to put it down for several hours from being so aghast. it wasn't terribly written, though there were some phrases that made me a little 🥴 but once i got past that, it was smooth sailing.
the writing style is so gripping. everything is so detailed, and each character felt unique and vibrant with their own distinct voice. the magic system is very unique and fun, and though we got superficial descriptions on the powers given by jade themselves (such as Deflection, Channeling, Steel, etc.), i do wish it went into a little more detail, because in some fights (at least in the beginning) it felt like we were being told something was happening rather than feeling the real experience itself. towards the end, though, it was more of an immersive experience, but of course by the end of a book you should be well-versed in a book's magic system.
i loved the characters. even the people we're supposed to hate (since they're the villains) are charming in a way that makes them admirable for existing as they are: the antagonists. they're well-written, and while i dislike their motivations and what they stand for, they are good characters in that they are clearly developed and raw in a way we can picture and understand and feel.
there were so many twists and turns in this book that felt genuinely shocking to me and had me on the edge of my seat with astonishment. there were some moments that i could see the exposition building up toward, but others were pleasant, but heart-wrenching, surprises.
as always, i can never find it in me to say too much about books i really enjoyed to keep the surprise there for anyone who happens to stumble upon my reviews, but i loved jade city, and i look forward to continuing this series to see how it plays out. i'm invested in this world, its characters, and the fate of every soul within.
