Such a tender book. Beautiful moments alongside the dark. I felt a connection with Tillie right away. This is, I think, the second graphic book of hers I read. The other being A City Inside. Her work is stunning.

"Spinning" is a graphic memoir that tells the story of Tillie Walden's coming of age, coming out, and figuring out her place in this world. This is all set to her twelve year long stint in figure skating, something that she did from a young age all the way through high school. Tillie traverses the highs and extreme lows of growing up different and the painful pressure of trying to be the best at what your Thing is. I thought the art style was beautiful, the storytelling was engaging, and I think anyone who grew up different can get something from this. That, in the end, is what I think this book is about. In the author's note, Walden basically says that its up to the reader what the book is actually about, and I choose that phrase: "growing up different." This book was beautiful. I'm sure that i will return to it when I need comfort.
