Whilst I didn’t have a terrible time reading this (the writing is decent), I don’t understand the project of this book. It was messy with too many ideas that never really led anywhere. Ultimately, I found the plot flimsy, and couldn't manage to suspend my disbelief.

Honestly, aspects of it were unnecessary and gratuitous. Much of what existed felt like it was there for shock value. I saw a reviewer refer to it as trauma porn, and I’m inclined to agree.

I set this book down and didn’t come back to it for weeks, so I wasn’t planning on rating it very highly as it didn’t stick in my mind. When I picked it back up (this time as an audio book), I couldn’t stop listening. I found the scene where she goes out on horseback to track the wolf to be so beautiful and heartbreaking. I’ve never read a better description of labor and what it feels like to birth a baby.

I thought the book was unnecessarily dark and plot line was rushed. It was difficult to have any sympathy or relatability to any of the characters. That being said, it was refreshingly creative and explores the dichotomy of good intention

Once There Were Wolves is a fascinating look into both the world of wolves and how we humans aren't that far off from becoming monsters ourselves. The rewilding science and the wolves interested me more than I thought it would, and sometimes was the main thing driving me to continue because Inti as a character was infuriating at times. Later, you find out why she is the way she is, but there were still moments where I wanted to strangle her for her sheer ignorance and stupidity.

But overall, it was still a great story. It speaks of how we are damaging our natural environment and how impirtant it is for predators like wolves to exist for the land to recover, but also how brutal and savage humankind can be themselves.
