A classic little pirate romp between a captures ex British navy-man and a pirate captain. Not the worst not the best, good fun all the same.

I'm so confused by my experience of reading this book, because I LOVED the other two books I read by this author, and then this one the two love interests barely feel like they even LIKE each other, much less that they're in love and are willing to risk death for each other??? But I did give it until around 75% before DNFing, so I do feel like I gave it a fair shake, I just don't know why this one felt like it was written by an entirely different author.

This was a great piece of historical naval fiction. I'm actually not that into pirate stories, but this was well-written, captivating and plausible. The romance wasn't that romantic, to be honest, but it complemented the rest of the story nicely.

I had forgotten how much I loved pirate stories. Why? I don’t have a clue. I have a tattoo of a pirate ship on my back. Maybe it should be somewhere more visible so that I don forget I was so fascinated with sailing ships and pirates that I would put a symbol of them on my body. I just finished the last season of Black Sails and was in the mood to see what was out there in manner of MM pirate fiction. My first choice so enthralled me that I stayed up too late reading and was miserable at work the next day.

The story begins with Kit searching for a new berth on ship. He is a lieutenant in the British navy and the sole survivor of a wreck that led to numerous rumors about his abilities as a sailor and whispers of his involvement in nefarious deeds not of his making. Kit’s godfather, a former admiral with the navy, secures him a position as an escort/valet to a gentleman travelling to the Caribbean. Unfortunately for Kit, their ship is set upon by pirates, killing the helmsman and pressing some of the men, including Kit, into service aboard their pirate ship.

Kit resolves to remain loyal to his uniform, not to join in the pirates’ endeavors and to plot his and another hostage’s escape to return to civilization as soon as possible. His obstacle is the captain of the pirate ship, former navy man, Major Yestin Griffin. Griffin keeps to himself for the most part, isolated in his cabin below, only coming up to relay orders and command the ship as necessary. Kit’s abilities with navigation are noted and become valuable to the captain in his mysterious plans.

Please note that I did not mention romance a lot in the review. That’s because this book is more about Kit’s adventure and finding his place in life. It’s about the relationships that he makes with the others along the way. Yes, he does fall in love with someone and there is an HEA but that is not the focus of the story. If you like a little romance with your story this book is for you. It is filled with a crew of characters, some you will enjoy and some you will hate and some will break your heart.

What a great yarn! The only thing wrong with it was that I wanted more.

I am conflicted on my feelings for this book, while I loved the characters and their adventures across the sea - the romance was lacking. Still I enjoyed all of the action and plot development, lots of pirate aspects to enjoy and their way of life with honour. The writing is incredible, with plenty of development and details throughout.

I enjoyed Kits pov and his sense of loyalty, keeping to promises and his own beliefs despite the situation. Yet he learns from those around him too and starts to see another way of life, why these people chose to be pirates and he begins to understand.

The friendships and relationships of the crew have a lot of focus, important to the progress of plot and their plans. I loved the twists and turns, the battles and banter between various crew.

Denny may be my favourite of the crew! His so much fun with his songs and comments, also enjoyed Saunders, his sarcasm and honesty as helps injured. Oh must mention Lewis and Protheroe who have probably the best relationship, i adored their love and passion for each other. Davy is wonderful too, as he trusts in Kit and supports him despite his longing for home.

Still I had hoped for more in the romance, as while the slow burn and enemies to lovers feels were great - amazing tension between Kit and Griffin. Their chemistry is stunning and i did enjoy all their moments together, it just wasn't as much a focus as I had hoped for.

The love didn't come across for me at all, they have more interactions with other people then each other as they have different shifts aboard the ship. It just didn't feel like they got to know much of each other, except from what observed and learned from other people.

Overall it was an interesting and enjoyable read, full of action and adventure across the seas. I enjoyed the plot and focus upon the pirates as they travel, searching for the next ship to loot.

Such a fascinating story with amazing world building! Along with a happy ending, look towards the next trip for Kit and Griffin

An enjoyable read, although with less romantic payoff than I was hoping for. If you like tales of derring-do and found family on the high seas with a splash of enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, this book is for you!

Very slow burn. Main character is slightly annoying but he comes around eventually.
