A dark, sad tale that tackles themes of superstition, folklore, religion, and loss. Wakenhyrst haunts long after it has been put down. So much of this book is setting up for the final act, but the emotional gut punches when the truth is revealed will last and linger. Do yourself a favour and dive into the Fens.

A delicious read for fans of Gothic novels! A slow unfolding mystery that turns into an avalanche of plot barreling down the mountainside!

A fairly quick and atmospheric read with a satisfying end. I quite liked the writing, I'll be checking out Dark Matter too. Maud was a good main character, her love of nature and knowledge and solitude was highly relatable to me. The way she was looked down upon and even threatened by every man of authority filled me with a impotent anger on her behalf.

My final thoughts rest on Felix, surprisingly. I do wish Maud had shown him a little affection, what a lonely life the poor lad must've had.
