I really really wanted to like this. I was so excited to read it but it was just so dry and full of irrelevant details that just made it drag so much.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I really struggle with nonfiction sometimes. I found this dry, couldn’t stick with it.

Liked it! Big history major vibes. Really cool writing using primary sources that paints a picture of the fear and suspicion that existed in colonial New England. It was a little slow, probably just as a function of a non-fiction story based heavily on primary sources and the epilogue was a little weird in tone.
slow-paced

This book was interesting! I was more interested in the history of witches than the history of New England / “old” England so I didn’t really enjoy chapters 1,2 or 9. I skimmed through the epilogue but must say the last paragraph was beautiful

An engrossing narrative about mistrust and everyone being in a claustrophobic space. In some ways this is a rather rational approach to witchcraft as things could be "explained" through a modern lens. Okay now I want to visit Springfield and Salem.
