It got too slow and boring. I could not get through it.

She was Casia Greythorne, a mercenary with a too-soft heart in spite of too many hard things, and one who had gone by countless other made-up identities. She was Valori de Solasen, the eldest child of Anric de Solasen and rightful heir to the most powerful throne_-the only intact throne-in the Kethran Empire. She was a dozen other aliases in this life: A sister, a friend, a soldier...And before this life, she had been someone altogether different. Someone that Elander had defied the gods for...an act with consequences she feared they still had not finished uncovering.

And so the third book begins.

I have to state my love for Zev. He’s sweet. He’s funny. He’s the brother of their made family. He’s the secondary character comedic relief who has come close to death one too many times.
"I'm a professional at not dying," Zev informed her with a smile, "nearly impossible to kill."
"Much like a cockroach," Nessa put in, grinning again. "In so many ways, really."

Hmmm, this has a lot of potential with gods and goddesses and new types of magic associated with each, but sometimes I felt the world building was lacking. However, maybe this is coming from someone who has been reading a lot of adult fantasy recently.
For a YA book, this is probably quite a good mix of spice, characters and magic, even if I wish there was more development (and less spice).

I would recommend this to fans of Throne of Glass and Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Uhhh I really wasn’t feeling this one. It just really dragged and the pacing felt weird. I just hated elander becoming like a cheerleader. I like cas but I like it better when they both have crazy ass powers. The twist was pretty good. Also for some reason once the mcs get together I find that all the spicy scenes after that are unnecessary so I skimmed through them here. But I guess I will have to figure that out if I want to continue to read fantasy romance.

Well, that was wild ride.

I recieved an ARC from the author and i am pretty sure all opinions are mine.

This book picks up exactly where second ended. So after month and months of wondering how the hell Elander would survive, he did it rather easily.

Varen his back to be a pain in the ___(use your imagination). Though I enjoyed Varen in the second book, he really pissed me off in this book.

Casia gets to spend more time with her found family which is so cute. Rhea, Nessa, Laurent, Zev(who I love), the gang is all here.

Casia as a whole is this book is a really emotional character to read about. She is fighting against the rook god not wanting to be his servant so she does not kill Elander. She goes a lot through this book and still constantly trying not to fall into cynism not matter if there was barely any hope. It was really inspiring.

Elander is really so supportive of Casia no matter what. She was slowly stripping him of his divinity which would have effectively killed him but he still stood by her side no matter what. I screamed when Varen pulled that dirty coward move in the end but thank God it worled out fine.

We also meet more of the divine gods. We find out a lot about the power hierachy and difficulties with the Gods. Nephele, the storm goddess was back in the book and that is already 1/4 of a star for this book.

I am also pissed about the situation of Prince Alder. I was really enjoying his character and bam that happened. Casia barely even felt sorry after it happened though it was somehow justifed because only knew him for a week

DEATH TO SARAITH, nuff' said.

Not much of a cliffhanger this time but still...
One of the best installments in the series.

S.M. Gaither continues to deliver with The Call of the Void. This is book three in the Shadows & Crowns series, and honestly? It leans way more into the politics than the first two, in a good way though. There's a lot of strategy, tension, and behind-the-scenes moves that really build up the bigger war that’s coming. It slowed down a little compared to the last book, but it made sense for where the story’s headed.

As always, S.M. Gaither’s writing stands out. Her world-building is amazing. It’s so detailed and well thought-out. It’s so vast yet meticulously detailed. You get the feeling that every location, every piece of history, every magical rule has been crafted with intent. It really feels like stepping into another world, and I enjoyed every part of the journey.

Casia continues to grow, and I love her more with each book. Also, her relationship with Elander? LOVE. They’re such a strong couple. They lift each other up, work together, and actually communicate, it’s honestly so lovely. I love that we’re getting the backstory’s of her friends & family too. There are also a lot of new characters introduced, including more gods. We get a better look at how the divine world works and the tensions between them.

The only downside is that the pacing felt a bit slower than the last book. It had more setup and wasn’t quite as action-packed, but there were still some surprises and exciting moments. These kinds of books are important to build the world and set the stage for what’s coming next, so I didn’t mind too much.

Overall, The Call of the Void is a solid addition to the series. It may be a bit slower, but it’s full of important developments, great characters, and a world I can’t wait to return to. I'm more than ready to follow Casia’s path all the way to the end.
