5 ⭐ definitely a new favorite... i want to read his other works now!
Another Zoom meeting.
A few had read before. Most found it rather a miserable story & characters. Interesting insight into history regarding state negativity towards Catholic Church and priests in Mexico which some weren’t aware of.
Some discussion of what can be a superficial perception of a country as a stereotype which is usually hugely incomplete.

This book came as something of a surprise hit to me. Having heard its name drifting in the modern classic conversational aether, I procured it for £2 at a charity shop, and let it gather dust on my shelf for a year until reading it. I wish I hadn't left it so long. I could only wish to describe how something can be so sensitive and yet so raw at the same time, a feeling that this book very easily achieves, stabbing a tack into the centre of how many of us try to rationalise and make sense of suffering. Half of the characters don't even have names, many of the main characters included, and the constant and seamless shift in perspectives makes for a very experimental, unique read from usual literary journeys, and makes for an optimal method to find out the reasons and passions that drive every character, whether we agree with their actions or not.
I definitely recommend reading this book; it doesn't take long and it truly conveys meanings and sentiments that one wouldn't expect words to have.

Skimmed this more than I care to admit because it was so wordy and changed POVs at the drop of a hate but there were some really great quotes.

Wow. This book provides so much food for thought and discussion. The ending made me cry, and yet there is a slight (but very real) ray of hope in the ending that makes it not an entirely depressing experience.
