Amazing read. I finished in two and half days. Remarkable story of Lawrence's connection with a herd of elephants that changed their fate. A man who truly understands the deep connection of oneness that transcends verbal communication.

This astounding memoir was a beautiful and heartbreaking journey into the lives of some of earth's greatest creatures. Lawrence Anthony's relationship with the elephants was wonderful to read about.

My love for elephants began when I was about five years old or so and got to ride an elephant at the circus. The massive, majestic creature carried little me around and now I can't stop thinking about these terrestrial wonders.

I learned so much about elephants. To be more specific, I learned so much about their emotions. Elephants are deeply intelligent and loving creatures with incredible vessels in which to hold knowledge and understanding. We can communicate with them more than we know. They communicate back. I loved learning of their family units and how they function. It's AMAZING.

I loved this story so much. I loved what I learned, what I felt, how I'm changed and what it stands for. I hope this story can reach more hearts, that we as a species can appreciate and respect our giant earth mates more.

Read it. Everyone. It's so beautiful.

Lawrence Anthony isn't a particularly strong writer, and he often goes off on non-elephant-related tangents that I found rather frustrating. But after reading the incredible story of how Anthony saved and forged a relationship with a herd of angry, distrustful elephants, you won't care about the book's shortcomings. Anthony's elephant tales -- which range from heartbreaking to funny to downright terrifying -- demonstrate that these animals have highly sophisticated communication systems and emotional intelligence. I have many friends who are passionate about elephants, and this book helped me to understand why.

This book is amazing. I can't recommend it enough. Beautiful story and really well written. Just read it!
adventurous funny informative inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

I'm a sucker for a good African animal book. If you are interested in elephants at all, you'll enjoy his story of growing a relationship with a traumatized herd of elephants. I have to say that I'm pretty jealous and I wish I could do what he did.

I couldn't love this book any more. It was informative, touching, and exciting. I want to read his other book about the Baghdad Zoo animals. I can't stop recommending this book!

A different kind of book than I usually pick up, but I really enjoyed it.

Loved this book. The story was compelling, I enjoyed the author's voice, and loved learning so much about elephants as well as the profession of species conservation in Africa. Great read.

Incredible.

I stumbled across this book by being lead by GR to Lawrence Anthony's other book, Babylon's Ark. I knew I wanted to read it, but after reading some reviews, it looked like many people were introduced to Anthony by first reading this book, The Elephant Whisperer. So this is where I've started as well.

I have an undying love for elephants. I've always been an animal person. My love for this species blossomed early in college, and it hasn't wavered since. Elephants are unarguably my favorite animal. I know some about them. I know of their vast intelligence and surprisingly human emotions. I understand the matriarchal herds and about the bachelors as well. I'm of course not an expert, but I think I know enough to validate my love for this animal. And so I was obviously attracted to this book from just the title.

To make this review concise, I am simply in awe of Lawrence Anthony's ability to connect with this herd of elephants. To take them from being frightened, dangerous, and on the verge of being to killed, to settling them at Thula Thula and forming a trusting bond leaves me in absolute adoration. Anthony's knowledge of elephants as well as all of Africa's animals and the environment in which they live is truly remarkable, and I have dreams of being that in tune with animals as well. I can't say enough how inspiring this man and this story are to me.

I don't typically read nonfiction either. I actually think this is my first nonfiction book I've read outside of a handful of memoirs and self help books. And what a positive introduction to the this genre I have gotten! To read through Anthony's stories about his herd and his game reserve, to know that these stories are real... It leaves me at a loss for words.

I feel so inspired having just finished this book. I made a resolution this year to give back every month to an organization or cause I feel strongly about. I must say that The Elephant Whisperer has only fueled my passion for conservation, and I will be researching more into Lawrence Anthony, his game reserve, and the organization he mentioned at the end of this book to find ways to help. I know Anthony past on not too long ago, but I'm encouraged beyond measure to support his vision through my own dedication to helping our planet thrive. You know a book is good when it sparks these kinds of feelings...

10 out of 10. Totally recommend.
