I listened to this book, which I highly recommend. Simon Vance’s voice is magnificent. I had never before thought of the animals in Africa this way. This book is a gift to us all.

Lawrence Anthony does it again! I first discovered him when I read his book, [b:Babylon's Ark: The Incredible Wartime Rescue of the Baghdad Zoo|409377|Babylon's Ark The Incredible Wartime Rescue of the Baghdad Zoo|Lawrence Anthony|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1312011815l/409377._SY75_.jpg|2327015] - which was lovely, and terrible - and was mesmerized by his commitment to animals. The Elephant Whisperer was another incredible journey told through excellent storytelling.
I was hesitant to read this for so long because of the unfortunate truth of sadness that comes with animal conservation. We know going into the story that there will be some sadness up front, but fellow animal lovers beware: there are some whoppers along the way. I didn't get out without a sob session. However, majority of the story is fascinating and enviable. Overall, I can set it down with a sense of joy for reading it; but I'm subtracting a star for the lingering pain of those tragic momentsBig beautiful boy, Mnumzane - when all it was was a toothache .

I would give this book ten stars if I could.
I have been wanting to read 'The Elephant Whisperer' for a while now but hadn't gotten around to buying the book until a week ago and I can honestly say that it was the best book decision I have EVER made.
Lawrence Anthony has an amazing way of completely sucking you into the story and at times you often wonder if this is truly a non-fiction book. This book took me on a spiritual and emotional journey; sadness, laughter, anger, frustration, joy, peace, contentment... you will feel everything while reading this. The story is about so much more than Lawrence's relationship with the Herd or even about the remarkable way he builds the trust necessary to save these majestic creatures. It is about life, about the bigger picture and about how we live so isolated from nature and what we were truly meant to be a part of.
Lawrence Anthony was an amazing man and I can't wait to read 'Babylon Ark' and 'The Last Rhinos'.

This enthralling, moving memoir about a wildlife game reserve in Zululand taught me so much about elephants, tribal politics, and the struggle against poaching. I was interested to see that the reserve is now a successful tourist destination, and I dream about visiting Thula Thula.
I plan to read his wife's follow-up, "There's an Elephant in my Kitchen," as well as Lawrence Anthony's first book, "Babylon's Ark."

Recommended by a friend, this one is a treasure. I love elephants, I love that they are family oriented and I love that they remember. This story of a conservationist and how he befriended a herd of elephants is very touching. Elephants should always have their family around them.
I loved this story. Highly recommend the audio version.
A moving story about the appearance of elephants at Thula Thula. Anthony gets the matriarch to trust him, and that feeling of trust grows over time. Meanwhile, Anthony's hope to is open a larger reserve, and he has to work with local Zulu chiefs and ultimately defend his own reputation and that of his reserve in some harrowing circumstances. But the real focus here is the elephants and their journey to becoming a well-integrated part of the reserve and in sharing all of the highs and all of the lows (and there are some terrible lows) that come with it. The novel is well and plainly written, giving Anthony enough of a voice so that he was present in the text, and I'm looking forward to reading Babylon's Ark next.

The author runs a game reserve in South Africa (note: not a place to contain game for hunting. a place to contain game FROM hunting) and mostly accidentally acquires a herd of difficult elephants, who promptly upend his life (and his fences). It’s great. I too would like to live with a herd of elephants with no respect for personal space and/or property. (…mostly sarcasm)
Anyway another good fun light read, would recommend
