So cute! Wish I had this when I was younger as a fellow queer theatre kid named Katie who realized she was queer around 12.

Love that both the author and the illustrator are sapphic and have OCD!! Both of them putting their wives in the acknowledgments is so cute.

Sweet, authentic graphic novel about  making peace with your identity. Young Katie probably comes to self acceptance a lot faster than most girls in a similar environment would, but I think her journey is deliberately accelerated to show kids what's possible and to perhaps get them there a little faster. Really nice, age-appropriate exploration of coming to understand your sexuality.

Katie goes to church, she is home schooled, and she loves theater. She is so hoping to be lead in the play Annie, but doesn’t get it. However, she lands the role of one of the orphans, as do the girls she is performing with. There is something so freeing about being part of the theater, something she is not allowed to feel in both church and in the home schooling group she is in.

All her friends keep talking about boys they have crushes on, and Katie can’t join in, because she doesn’ts have these feelings. At least not these feelings for a boy.

The author said she wrote this for all the kids out there who are afraid of what they are feeling, and hide that part of themselves to fit in with the norm. She says she wishes she had had a book like this when she was growing up.

Oh, I know that so well. I also remember all the girls talking about boys they liked, when I, like Katie, had a crush on a girl. You can pretend to be part of the group, but it feels wrong, and that is what Katie feels.

This book does not, of course, solve all the problems of going through puberty and having first crushes, but it does show a way to navigate those waters.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out the 29th of October 2024.

I loved this one, maybe because she is getting ready to be Annie in the play, but nothing goes as she expects in her life as well. So many changes. There's so much to jugle, crushes, peers, social and religious pressure, first period, adults expectations. God. But she discovers among her anxieties that some emotions are positive and joyful. She likes Grace, and it makes Katie feel as if she can belong after all on planet Earth.
I like the art style a lot. There are a lot of relatable issues addressed in this one.

Katie is turning twelve, which also seems to mean everything and everyone is changing very very quickly. New responsibilities, new friends, and new...questions? about her identity? seem to be the norm as Katie figures out where she fits between her family, her homeschool co-op, her (toxic) church group, and her theater community. A sweet middle grade read that tackles some heavy topics, particularly pertaining to Katie's struggles with religion and her identity.
