This totally happened for some friends (all the way up through book two for now), and I remain forever in the charms and arms of Jaqueline Carey's type of writing. I love her vocabulary and lyricism, and they I'm just stolen away forever by her fully flushed cultures, religions, politics, histories, and how they all overlap. Nothing about this series ages in the years since purchasing it on each first publication dates or reread since.

I liked this book but not nearly as much as the first one. I didn’t feel this book added much in terms of character development, in fact I felt it detracted more so. Phèdre was quite annoying and uncompromising and while I feel like Jocelyn probably had a lot of character development, we didn’t get any of that in the book! In addition, it felt like at the end
we ended up in the same place we started

perfect. no notes.

this series has quickly (or not so quickly considering the size of each of these books) become my favourite series of all time despite only having read book 1 and 2. When comparing the first and second books, this one probably has fewer dramatic plot points than the first and yet this one felt so much more intense due to the relationships and overall understanding of the world's politics that I have retained and strengthened from the first book. Also one of my most favourite endings to a book, so delightful and was very much needed; give my girl Phedre a break.

Words cannot do this book and this series justice and I desperately need to continue on with the next.

These books are weirdly fascinating and good to me. Though they can be slow at times I am hooked by the political intrigue, the rich cultures, and the excitement of the story.

I find it weird that these books are under the erotica sub-heading a lot...though there is sex and in some cases BDSM it is not the focus of this book at all. Though Phedre is an anguisette and in no better terms a courtesan she is so much more than that and the anguisette part of the story is only there to denote who she is. This story is about her struggle to survive and save her country and ruler. It is political in many ways and adventurous in others. To me erotica is where the sex is the main story and the reason for so much...this is not about that at all.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my friends. Hopefully this series keeps up with the craziness and intrigue and keeps me on my toes.
