I'm pretty sure Jacqueline Carey is a genius. The way she writes Phédre and her world is masterful. This book was gripping start to finish, and the angst is truly something else. I love all our new companions, especially the pirate! And the ending was epic. This has quickly become one of my favorite books series ever.

Better than the first, I think. Some of the linguistic quirks bug the hell out of me - if I never read the word "murmured" again, it'll be too soon - but the mythology is fascinating and the political intrigue is very well-crafted. I love the differing cultures, especially visiting totally not Venice. It's funny, I didn't really expect to like them enough to start the second, and here I plan to read the third for sure. I don't know about moving past Phedre's trilogy, but we shall see. I'll definitely take a break, though.

Just as long and well-written as the first book. But I lost interest at this point. Didn’t really feel like we were covering any new ground, and I got uncomfortable at the growing zionism-coded subplot

The first part was stronger than the rest, although the political intrigues were astounding as always. Loved the conflicts between Phedre and Joscelin. Ysandre was such amazing queen in this instalment.
