Second time through and I loved it even more than the first. Something about this alternate history universe just makes it eternally somewhere I would rather live. Subtle differences in the world are all it takes to make a paradise from the mundane. And especially reading it again as the FSoG movie was released, I was reminded that these books were for certain the best depictions of BDSM and consent culture that I could point someone to.

This first trilogy will always be a gem among all that I read.

In the two books I’ve read from Jacqueline Carey, I’ve noticed that she has an uncanny knack for setting up plot twists that I should see coming and still, somehow, I’m surprised when they happen. There were definitely a few “Oh shit” moments in this book. There were also moments that I saw coming from a mile away and was rooting so hard for them to happen. And when they did, it was oh so satisfying. Carey is an excellent writer. Phedre is an excellent and unique protagonist. The cast of characters around her are top notch. I loved this book.

I absolutely loved this book. It was awful that it took me so long but then that's the bane of being a college student some times. Moving twice didn't help much but yeah.
