This is a work you will dip into again and again to read the letters that most strike a cord with you. And after you enjoy this, you will no doubt want to follow up with the second book, [b:Lists of Note|23123095|Lists of Note|Shaun Usher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1409325539s/23123095.jpg|42671897].

This is an extensive collection! Some letters I struggled to get through or passed by quickly, but others offered me insight, a laugh or two, a tear or two and some inspiration. I loved that they included copies of the letters themselves, along with transcripts, so the reader could easily see what was being said but could also see the original way it was written.
One of my books of this year! It shocks, it makes you laugh, it makes you want to cry, read passages out loudly, it inspires you and restores your faith in humanity. Read it slowly and savour it. It's perfect.

I began following the blog/website for Letters of Note back in 2009. I was instantly hooked. This book captures the imagination, reality, and beauty that exists in the writings of a slew of famous people throughout history. A few notable letters from this printed edition are: letter from NASA's then director to a Nun, Katherine Hepburn to Spencer Tracy, Raymond Chandler's letter to an editor, Francis Crick (one of the founders ofthe structure of DNA) to his son, letter from Jermain Logue (ex-slave) to the wife of his former "owner", and the adorable letter from "Uncle Lynn" (animator Chuck Jones' uncle) to his nephews and nieces after the death of the family dog. I thoroughly enjoyed the varied collection of letters in this edition.
Such interesting personal history and delight in here.
Glad it's on my coffee table.
