Love this book! The letters are engaging, interesting and intelligent. The letter writers include Twain, Woolf, Vonnegut, Bronte and many others. Highly recommend.
This book was really beautiful (aesthetically pleasing. I read the hardcover.) It's the perfect coffee table book. (Do people still have them? They should. I have always appreciated a good browse whilst waiting for my host to bring me libations, if I'm not already in the bathroom cataloging their meds and making inferences about their personal grooming habits.) It's attractive. You can read in short bursts. The letters are all interesting. I was shocked that some of them even existed let alone survived, were discovered, and made accessible. And now I have some letters to write and a typewriter to acquire. (It's inspiring!)

This took me quite a while to read because I read a letter here and a letter there, and then forgot that I had it in my Kindle app for a period! It’s an interesting concept - a collection of letters to and/or from famous people. Some are more interesting than others - some of the “famous” people I’ve never heard of, so they didn’t mean much to me.
I liked that a lot of the letters included a copy of the original, so you could read them in the person’s own handwriting, if you wished. If their handwriting was indecipherable, a printed copy was also included.

Inspiring. Humbling. Funny. Crazy. Monumental. Heartbreaking. Just some of the words that are evoked when reading this collection of correspondence from famous historical figures to uber cool contemporary icons. For anyone interesting in the epistolary form, this a must have. For those who are not, buy it anyway because you'll find something in here that will floor you.
This is a lovely book both to read in full from cover to cover, and to dip in and out of at will. Stephen Fry promises that you 'will never tire of it' on his front cover review, and there is certainly a lot to discover, and rediscover on subsequent readings. The contents are diverse, and whilst I enjoyed reading some of these letters far more than others, the historical scope is wonderful. It is sure to both charm and surprise, and would make a wonderful gift for the staunch letter writer in your life. I could quote at length from my favourite inclusions, but do not wish to spoil it. Go, read, explore.
