Interesting letters, but I think I liked Lists of Note better. Found myself skimming over many of these.
I love to write letters. I don't think what I write will ever be in a book, but these were fascinating! Such a wonderful way to communicate so many things - it was like being present during various parts of history.
I absolutely LOVED this book! Such a wide ranging set of historical writings! You can't help but be drawn in to many of the selections!
Beautiful, evocative, and funny. Kudos for getting me to care about something I don't care about, like comic books.
Ideal for ESL students, this compilation of letters could be read or listened to and either respond with their reflections or contextualise its significance. An engaging exercise could involve comparing two letters, examining their differences in style and tone—especially as there are over 100 letters, many with closely related themes.
Letters 109 and 102, for instance, both explore the art of loving (one from a former President to his son; the other, from John Steinbeck to his son).

Marvelous and compelling and telling and just lovely. The various voices and the personalities that are shown through these words are just fascinating

Excellent read. Loved seeing the actual letters. Some letters that stuck out to me: the woman in 1855 who had a mastectomy without any form of anaesthetic, a slave's letter to his former master who was asking him to come back, a Chinese mother's letter to a school in San Francisco who told them off for trying to force her daughter to a different school because she was of Chinese descent, the letter about the Elephant Man that finally brought on an empathic reaction from the public for the first time in his life, the queen's scone recipe, the letter from Jack the Ripper that accompanied half a kidney, and the creator of Ren & Stimpy who not only bothered to reply to a 14 year old who wrote to him...but proceeded to give him an 8 page letter with advice, tips, and drawings. I could go on and on, read this book.
