I live in the county this book is about. I already know most of the information presented in it, as it goes around via gossip in the county. To have it validated through Weiss's research and interviews makes it even more real to me. The book shines a light for others on the church and its secretive practices. There is nothing overblown in the book, which readers who are not familiar with WOFF need to know. Yes, they dress that way. Yes, they act that way. Yes, the church's fingers are in every aspect of our county. Yet, outsiders still do business with them and carry a "let them do them" attitude. It is frightening how embedded they are in law enforcement and the government. It's worth the read.

This was just absolutely heartbreaking to read. It also made me furious, because how could someone do stuff like that to innocent people. No, they haven't killed anyone (that I'm aware of) but the cult in this book destroys not only the lives of their victims but also the victims family, and extended family, and friends. It's just awful.

You'll notice I didn't rate it. I don't like to rate true crime non fiction books because I refuse to rate someone's suffering out of 5 stars.

In any case, this was a book that taught me a lot and helped me learn things I didn't know before.

Cults don't have to kill people to be dangerous.

This is an insane, wild ride. I'd never heard of Word of Faith but I was absolutely riveted. The style takes a second to get used to because it's about the experiences of multiple people and jumps around from person to person, but it was really respectfully done and super interesting.

This is a crazy story. I am shocked I haven't even heard of this cult, and also shocked that Word of Faith has been allowed to continue to operate for decades with help from the local police and authorities. Sad how many people have been ensnared in this cult, and even those who escape are still persecuted and shunned by their families years later.

This book made me angry. Angry for all the abuse that was done to these victims, many of them children raised in this group. Angry at their parents for allowing this to go on. Angry that when victims did do the right thing in going to the authorities, apparently corruption prevented justice from happening.

This book was also compelling. I found it hard to read at times with the abuse described within, but I also couldn't put it down. I had to know what would happen next.

I will continue to follow this story as it is still ongoing.
