The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

On one hand, this is the most readable book I've encountered in a while. It was so easy to keep turning pages.

On the other, it became incredibky frustrating somewhere in the second half, when everyone was losing their darn minds over Tedros, who has the personality of a fence post and who seems to be getting by on being dashing alone. Which lead to the true frustration, which was the over-emphasis to be "good" you must be conventionally attractive, and that if you aren't you are evil.

I was hoping that this convention would be blatantly bucked by having Sophie and Agatha in the "wrong" houses, but then came the final battles with students' "bad" acts making everyone uglier, only to have "good" acts make them conventionally pretty again. And I absolutely hate the idea that the outside has to match the inside to get the point across. One of the things I actually enjoyed in the early parts was seeing Sophie have her princess-pretty looks while committing acts that were not in line with her appearance; while Agatha was being a paragon storybook princess without the ballgowns and flowing silky locks.

The book started off so determined to flip conventions, only to ultimately end up playing into them in a skewed effort to show that we are all, ultimately, a mix of both good and evil.

A taky víc Tedrose.

It’s different from fairytales ya books. Also I’m on the fence about going to school to become our favorite favorite fairytale heroes or villains. But I did like the ending
