Reads like fanfiction to me. An amazing, great world, but with obnoxious tropes and characters. This was definitely written by a beginner writer.

APPARENTLY, THE AUTHOR COMPLETELY RUINS IT IN THE 2ND BOOK, SO I WILL NOT BE READING THE REST OF THE SERIES.

I'm going to read the second one too, because I don't know if the book was really plain and predictable and trying to do some things that it didn't achieve or if it gave me that impression because I knew more or less the plot of the movie and it was setting things up for the rest of the series.

Overall I think I liked this book except this little detail. They were all so young and were forced into conflict and romantic relationships. There were several times when the decisions either felt illogical or not age appropriate. I'm no expert on it so I may be completely wrong, that's just the way it felt to me. Something that was done right though is it kept me hooked most of the way, it even has me wanting to read the next book even though I was so unhappy with some things. I did appreciate how Agatha's goal was realistic and consistent for most of the story until it got to the end. I didn't feel the same about Sophie. (spoiler ahead) <I was unhappy that it ended in a way where they were supposed to accept their fates instead of continuing to try to get home. Accept that they were enemies? Then at the last second it flips to the villain being someone else, but it still felt bad.> (spoiler over) Note:Too many content warnings for me to remember, most were minor to moderate, but they definitely added up to me not enjoying the book as much because of it.

One of my favorite series ever, The School for Good and Evil, while written for younger readers, is good for any age. It's got a super interesting concept, a fun setting, and compelling characters. Sophie and Agatha are amazing main characters, and you'll be so invested in their relationship. Honestly, the only thing keeping this from the YA category is the absence of cursing and makeout scenes.
