it took awhile to pick up but once it did, it was really good. definitely not a typical beach read; the language is a little more complex, but it was really good. the ending message was far more profound than i would typically expect from a historical fiction type novel

Had to read this for book club. I am not a historical fiction or contemporary fiction reader and unfortunately this is both. Literally nothing about the first hour of the audiobook grabbed me. I dreaded picking this up again so much I put myself into a reading slump and I only got 6% in

Devastating, beautiful. Shines a light on a harsh reality of our nation’s past that still impacts today’s foster care system. Cannot recommend enough, but have your tissues handy.
