What a dazzler!

Haven't had this much fun since The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Skip superlatives...go straight to book.

can’t express enough how much i loved valente’s style. got a little too ambitious with the world building and history, but the way it was presented was so enjoyable that i found i didn’t really mind.

Could these sentences get any longer???

Reads a lot like Douglas Adams. A tongue-in-cheek look at the Science Fiction genre. I like the idea of humanity being saved by a contest that looks a lot like American Idol.
adventurous funny lighthearted medium-paced

3.5 stars!!!

My reaction was pretty much the reaction of those who criticized the book. I went in hoping for some campy light fare about a music competition - sort of Sing! meets Star Wars or something - and I discovered Douglas Adams meets a train wreck. Which wasn't that bad - there were moments when I laughed aloud; but what started off as funky and fresh, quickly became dull and irritating. This felt like Valente was trying too hard to out-Adams Douglas Adams. I would've preferred a good story with characters to whom I could relate. I only partially related to them because I had to wade through a thick sludge of minor alien descriptions and technobabble to get to the meat. By the end, there was a payoff, but the cost was a bit too high. I almost made this my one book I allow myself not to finish for the year (and it's only March!). Still, there is fun to be had if you have patience for the somewhat overdone writing.

É ISSO THANKS FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK

This book was quite fantastic. Everything about it was just so utterly one-of-a-kind, from the outrageous premise itself, to the cheeky writing style, to the different types of aliens encountered throughout. It was hilarious, but also had heart at its core. The references packed throughout were sprinkled in with such finesse, and you can feel the passion that went into this book on every page. It also quite pointedly had something to ~say~ and I think it got that across rather well. The pacing was a little weird because well, this whole book was a little—read: a lot—weird, but overall I had a great time with it. I definitely won’t be forgetting this novel, as it’s hands down one of the most unique reads I’ve ever encountered, in the best of ways.
