Dnf. Trying too hard. Don't make every single sentence a joke!

Wacky, fun, and silly. Space Opera was easy to read and wove a surprisingly complicated, heart felt, and deep story. Great for a quick camp read, but did not blow my socks off
funny lighthearted fast-paced

this has been compared to the discworld and hitchhiker's guide series and it is DEFINITELY deserving of that.

the prose was lovely, the humor was absurd, the aliens were interesting, and the cast itself is diverse & very very human.

This was wild. when i started it, it felt like i was hallucinating while reading. it’s honestly incredible how she managed to write all these words and string them together, and once you get used to it, it’s really funny and absurd and i enjoyed it. it’s better to read in longer sittings so you don’t have to re get used to the style every time.

This was a mix between Dungeon Crawler Carl and Eurovision... It didn't work well.

2.5/5
This book tried so hard.
It wanted to be a lot of things, like it was blatantly trying to replicate the tone of the “hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy” but it ended up being overly verbose and pretentious instead of witty and funny.
The whole Eurovision is space thing is just an excuse to write a lot of little, very imaginative, chapters about some strange alien species, which I guess were interest but did we really need a whole book of ‘em?!
This story could have been told in 20 pages and it would have been the same. I’d save just some chapter and Decibel Jones who was a charming character.
Overall this was a bit of a disappointment.

This is the most Douglas Adams thing I have ever read that wasn't written by Douglas Adams. It's fun and clever and - just when you least expect it - deeply heartfelt. If "Hitchhikers Guide + pop stars" or "Eurovision in space" or "David Bowie + aliens" - if any of these appeal to your sense of whimsy, read this book.

Caveats: I found this to be a slow-ish read. There are a lot of (amazingly weird and creative) aliens and planets to keep track of, to the point where I was tempted to go back and make a chart. And the main story - which is relatively slight, plotwise, though rich in detail - is interspersed with intergalactic history. Which is also rich in detail and creativity, but it does compel you to slow down so you can absorb all that.

In short, this was not a book I couldn't put down, but it is a book I look forward to reading again. And next time maybe I'll make that chart.
