about a third of the way through this book my thought was “this better not be cabin in the woods” and then i finished it and it was indeed just a badly done version of cabin in the woods

It was interesting reading this after Mister Magic and seeing the through-lines between them. This feels like a messier attempt at the themes that Mister Magic explores, but the premise and characters here are incredibly strong.

I loved this book! Very spooky, not too gory, and perfect amount of tension. I didn't realize it was a sort of folk horror book until about halfway through, but I was pleasantly surprised (that's my fave horror genre!).

Exceptionally creepy and disturbing. This would make a really cool movie.

- At the beginning, it was hard to keep track of the characters
- I think the author built up suspense and created an uneasy atmosphere at the park
- I grew to really liking for some of the characters. I was really rooting for them

Mack’s backstory was so sad and the twist on how she stole her sister’s hiding spot was a bit shocking to me. I was also shocked that Brandon decided to kill himself to save the group. He was probably one of my favourite characters because of how genuinely sweet he was. The man just wanted to build a life with his new friends! I really wish there weren’t TWO Ava’s because it was a bit confusing at times to keep up. I initially thought that one of the contestants was The Killer or that they were being hunted for sport by rich people. I guess I was partially correct with the rich person part lol I honestly cannot picture the beast in my head properly so I low key wish the author had included an illustration of it somewhere at the end. The journal entry Ian (the writer) found was confusing as hell to me, but the chapter with Linda’s journal made a lot more sense and things really clicked then. I was expecting them to kill the beast at the end for some closure. However, the thrill of knowing that the beast is roaming free is CHILLING. I like how it makes you think about the remaining trio will manage, as well as everyone else in the bloodline.
