This was not for me. The writing was too heavy-handed and the situation felt too over-the-top. Also, there was SO much packed into this pretty short novel that it ended up lacking nuance for me and more like a checklist of issues. While I probably agree with the author on many things and I appreciate the attempt at showing the intersectionality of race, culture, wealth and power, I’m not sure that this was a successful novel for me. I wish the author would’ve trusted that the reader that they could draw their own conclusions and that infer certain things.

This book is set in the Orange County, CA area and follows an Indian family navigating an issue that happens in their very privileged and very white neighborhood.   I could not put this one down. It was emotional and takes another look at what racism and privilege can look like in these modern times.  It really highlighted some of the differences of first gen immigrant parents and second gen kids. First gen parents don't always have the experience or knowledge of what it's like to grow up in America so often, their children are figuring things out for themselves and I could really relate to that. This was great on audio and in print, both worked equally well. This is a must read!

Thank you BookBrowse for sending me this book. Our online bookclub will begin the first week of April. Priya and Ashok immigrated to America twenty years ago from India. Their two daughters and son were born in America. One night their 12 year old son is arrested. All of a sudden their life has changed.

Listened to this one on audio. Loved the themes of immigration, racism, assimilation, role of policing in communities, family dynamics. A beautiful story of all that is involved in starting fresh in a new country, and the deep importance of friendship.
