Good start, middle dragged a bit, good ending. Would have given it three stars but I cried a couple times so gave it a bonus star for the emotional impact.
Also it felt very realistic, especially how the ending played out, which I appreciated.
I also liked how the police characters were depicted. It wasn’t “all cops are power drunk racist assholes” … it didn’t shy away from that stereotype either, but it felt more real and human.

I have read all of Gowda's previous novels, and absolutely loved all three of them. Something was really off about A Great Country as compared to her other books, and that was so disappointing. The characters in this novel felt like cliches, no one felt realistic at ALL, and she threw so many subjects in the book it felt like she was trying to Say Something with every single character. If the book was longer, or had better character development, it might have been okay, but with such a short novel, trying to pack so many characters and so many ISSUES into it simply didn't work. I wish this book had been better, but I will still read her next novel as her first three were so successful for me.
