I think the beginning was fantastic - I felt the tension deeply. The rest of the book was imho superficial, making it drag. Also find any portrayal of a "good guy" cop to be science fiction. This isn't real.

This is a powerful book centered on a real problem the US faces and how it affects one family. The storyline had me hooked from the beginning, and I felt like the characters were very relatable. The ending was just a bit too easily wrapped up in my opinion. Overall, this was a great read and a story that needs to be told. I recommend for those who enjoy books about racial divides in current affairs.
The book wasn't as ground breaking as I thought it would be, but I think that has to do more with where I am with the race/social justice discussions. I think if you are someone who never really thought about issues like those, then yeah maybe this book would open your eyes. However for me it just didn't hit. In the end I hope more people will finally recognize that being a model minority will not save you from prejudice and racism.

Graphic: Racism
Moderate: Xenophobia, Police brutality, Classism
This wasn't bad but the discussions of race and class were a bit too spelled out in an after school special kind of way. I loved the message, but wished it had been done in a more nuanced way. This is most definitely an example of bookclub fiction. Decently written and interesting, but I generally don't love love books that have 3+ POVs because I just can't connect deeply to the characters.
