I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and didn’t know a lot about it except for the title. Oh my gosh, it was an amazing book! It was about love and friendship, and realizing who you truly are and everything in between. I felt so connected to all of the characters, and felt like I was living out the story standing by their side. You will laugh and you will cry. The writing was so good, and the story just had terrific depth. I highly highly recommend this book!

Very sweet and a bit on the nose, this is a lovely story set in small-town England. Featuring an older gay man coming to terms with his past and looking towards the future, he manages to set a new course for his future in the most charming way.

While I found the story to be a bit too inspiration for my taste, I loved how it explored queer history while still managing to provide a happy ending.

Touching and heartwarming story about a man who lives a solitary life, worrying that he will not be understood following the terrible treatment he received when his father discovered he was gay. Explores the experiences and stigma of growing up gay and how attitudes have changed over the decades since the 1950s.

Albert has worked in the same job as a postman since leaving school. He avoids mixing with his work colleagues as much as possible, but he loves his job and is devastated to find he is going to be forced to retire at his next birthday.

Events conspire to make him think about how much he regrets having to break up with his boyfriend all those years ago, and he gradually gets the courage and help from his new friends to try to find his long lost love.

In general, I don't feel like there are many stories about elder gays, so it was nice to read a story about an elder growing into himself and also growing close to others again. Communities are crucial and important and I feel like this book did a really good job illustrating that. Albert's journey was about finding George, but I was most enthralled by the relationships he built with those around him.

I think perhaps it is my realistic pessimism and the general state of the world in the United States at the moment, but I didn't really enjoy the easy resolutions to the homophobia and misogyny.
For Jack, the general fall back of I'm insecure and what I want people to like me, so therefore I'm going to be an asshole, just felt cliche. I feel the way he was written character was trying to push against Albert's perception (of Jack as his Dad) as well as the readers (of Jack as an asshole) but it was just too neat. I also just kind of cringed at the scene where everyone in town finds out he's gay because all of his workmates are willfully outing him. And yeah it goes well, but it just felt detached from reality. Like why would I be happy them outing him without permission, yeah it's going well, but god what a dick move.

I found Nicole's storyline really cute and honestly really well done. She was interesting to watch grow into her own confidence, and I appreciated her commitment to her daughter.

In general, I think this was a nice, very British, escapist fantasy that I just am not in the right real world place to fully engage with. If you want to read a book where everyone is done with gay people and we all get a happy ending, definitely do read it. I can understand why people love it so much, just don't think I was in the right mood.
